Klargester BA-X BioDisc Service – Kinross

We recently carried out a routine service on a Klargester BA-X BioDisc sewage treatment plant in Kinross.

The plant was operational and generally in good mechanical condition, but the service identified several developing mechanical and electrical issues that could have resulted in more serious faults if they had remained undetected.

BA-X BioDisc & Control Panel Inspection

A full mechanical and electrical inspection was completed on the BioDisc and its associated control equipment.

  • Incoming supply voltage: 240V
  • Motor supply voltage: 230V
  • Motor current draw: 0.31A
  • Control panel condition: Good
  • Control panel wiring: Good
  • Drive belt condition: Good
  • Top and bottom pulleys: Good
  • Motor gearbox: Good

Six Shaft Clamps Required Tightening

During the mechanical inspection, six of the twelve shaft clamps were found to require tightening.

These clamps are important structural components that help secure the rotating disc pack assembly. If they are allowed to remain loose, movement can develop within the assembly and potentially lead to significant mechanical damage.

All shaft and rotor clamps were inspected, the six loose clamps were tightened and every clamp was confirmed present and secure following maintenance.

Motor Start Capacitor Replaced

Electrical testing identified that the motor start capacitor was outside its acceptable tolerance.

The capacitor assists the BioDisc motor during startup. If allowed to deteriorate further, it could eventually result in the motor struggling or failing to start correctly.

A new motor start capacitor was supplied and fitted free of charge, removing this developing fault before it could cause a breakdown.

Water Found in Dosing Pump Junction Box

The dosing pump junction box was also found to contain water.

Water inside electrical connections can increase the risk of earth leakage, nuisance tripping, short-circuiting and deterioration of terminals.

The water was removed and the dosing pump was electrically disconnected to prevent potential future electrical trip faults.

Drive System & Alarm Testing

The complete BA-X drive system was inspected and tested following maintenance.

  • Drive belt inspected
  • Top and bottom pulleys inspected
  • Drive-end bearing inspected
  • Non-drive-end bearing inspected
  • Motor gearbox inspected
  • Rotor shaft inspected
  • All clamps confirmed secure
  • Complete drive system tested successfully
  • Loss of rotation alarm tested
  • Loss of power alarm tested

Both alarm systems were confirmed to be operating correctly.

Treatment Performance

The biological treatment process was operating correctly at the time of the service.

  • Thick, healthy biomass present
  • Effluent visually clear
  • No abnormal odours detected
  • Tank structure in good condition

Sludge Levels

  • Primary crust: 200mm
  • Primary sludge: 200mm
  • Final crust: 0mm
  • Final sludge: 150mm

The plant does not currently require desludging. Sludge levels should be reassessed at the next scheduled service.

Why Preventative BioDisc Servicing Matters

This service highlighted several developing issues that had not yet caused the plant to fail.

Loose shaft clamps, a deteriorating motor start capacitor and water within an electrical junction box all had the potential to develop into more serious mechanical or electrical faults.

Regular preventative servicing allows these components to be checked before they result in unexpected breakdowns or costly repairs.

We provide Klargester BA-X BioDisc servicing, repairs and preventative maintenance across Kinross and throughout Scotland.
