BD BioDisc Service – Ladybank, Fife

We recently carried out a routine service on a BD BioDisc sewage treatment plant in Ladybank, Fife, for one of our existing customers. The system was fully operational on arrival, and we performed a detailed inspection of all key mechanical, electrical, and biological components to ensure it was running at its best.

What We Checked

  • Stripped and checked both drive-end and non-drive-end bearings.
  • Inspected the entire drive assembly — including top and bottom pulleys, chain tension and alignment, and the motor mount condition.
  • Tested the Panasonic drive motor, recording 230V supply and a 1.0 amp draw — well within expected ranges.
  • Verified that all radial arms and clamps were secure and in good condition.
  • Confirmed that the Kingspan control panel and alarm system were working as expected.
  • Inspected the media pack and confirmed a healthy biofilm was present on the first stage of the disc pack, with gradual clearing towards the end — a clear sign of effective treatment.

Sludge Levels & Tank Condition

The sludge and crust levels were low, so no tank emptying was required at this time. We advised that the tank could likely wait until the next service before desludging — saving the customer on unnecessary tankering costs.

Observations

While servicing, we discovered the belt guard was partially flooded, indicating that the water level inside the tank may have risen unusually high in the past. As this unit is on a gravity outlet system, we advised the customer to have the downstream drainage inspected, as a partial blockage may be restricting flow.
