KSB Sewage Pump Station Repair – Rutherglen, Glasgow

KSB pump station repair in Rutherglen — We recently attended a single sewage pump station in Rutherglen, Glasgow following an electrical fault affecting the reliability of the system.

Once on site, we carried out a full inspection of the pump, chamber, float controls, alarm system and control panel. Several separate faults were identified, including a flooded internal junction box, unreliable float switches, a disconnected high-level alarm and a faulty contactor inside the ageing control panel.

Initial Inspection

The station is fitted with a KSB Ama-Porter 601 NE sewage pump and a KSB EDW control panel.

The pump itself was found to be in good mechanical condition. The guide rails, lifting chain, discharge claw, impeller and non-return valve were all inspected and found to be operating correctly.

Pump Chamber Before and After

Sludge build-up was present within the chamber. This was disturbed, diluted and pumped away during the visit.

The pump was removed from the chamber, cleaned and inspected before being reinstalled. The complete system was then tested to confirm that the pump was lifting water and operating correctly.

Flooded Junction Box Repair

One of the main faults found during the callout was a completely flooded electrical junction box inside the pump chamber.

Water had entered the box and affected the electrical terminations. All connections were cut back to clean sections of cable before being remade using a new terminal block.

The junction box was then secured above floor level to reduce the risk of it becoming submerged again.

Float Switch and Alarm Repairs

The pump chamber uses three float switches to control the stop, start and high-level functions.

Both the stop and start floats were operating intermittently and were replaced. The high-level alarm circuit had also been disconnected before our arrival.

The high-level float was reconnected and the audible alarm was tested and confirmed fully operational.

Faulty Contactor and Temporary Repair

Further fault finding identified a defective contactor inside the existing control panel.

A temporary repair was completed to restore operation. This allowed the pump station to be returned to service, but it was not considered a permanent repair.

The existing control panel was old and contained ageing components. Complete replacement was therefore recommended to provide a more reliable long-term solution.

New Control Panel Requested

Following our recommendation, the customer requested that we return to supply and install a new control panel.

This will provide a proper long-term solution instead of relying on the temporary contactor repair and other ageing electrical components within the existing panel.

The replacement control panel will improve the reliability of the pump station and reduce the risk of further unexpected electrical faults.

System Condition After Repair

After completing the repairs, the pump station was fully tested and left operating correctly.

• High-level alarm restored and tested

Why Proper Fault Finding Matters

This job involved several separate faults rather than one simple issue.

The flooded junction box, unreliable float switches, disconnected alarm and faulty contactor were all affecting the reliability of the pump station.

Proper fault finding allowed each problem to be identified and dealt with correctly, rather than simply resetting the system and leaving the underlying faults unresolved.
