Twin Pump Chamber Control Panel Replacement & Remedial Repairs
Caledonia Environmental recently returned to a twin sewage pump chamber to complete the recommended remedial works following an inspection carried out on 27 September 2026.
During the original inspection, we identified that the existing twin-pump control panel was operating intermittently. More importantly, the control panel had been installed inside the sewage pump chamber itself, which is not normal or recommended practice for a conventional electrical control panel.
Our return visit involved removing the existing control equipment, installing a new externally mounted twin-pump control panel, fitting stainless steel lifting chains, installing protective ducting and securing a loose discharge claw on Pump 1.
Following completion of the works, the entire pumping system was recommissioned and tested successfully.
Original Control Panel Installed Inside the Sewage Pump Chamber
One of the most concerning findings during our initial inspection was the location of the existing control panel.
Rather than being installed externally in a suitable, accessible position, the original twin-pump control panel had been installed within the sewage pump chamber itself.
This is not normal or recommended practice for a conventional electrical control panel. Sewage pump chambers can expose equipment to moisture, condensation, corrosive gases and potentially hazardous atmospheres.
Installing control equipment within this environment can also make routine maintenance, electrical inspections and fault finding considerably more difficult.
In addition to its unsuitable location, the existing control panel was operating intermittently, making replacement necessary.
New External Twin-Pump Control Panel Installation
The original control equipment was disconnected and removed as required.
A new twin-pump control panel was supplied and installed externally in a suitable position adjacent to the pump chamber.
Relocating the control panel outside the chamber provides improved access for future inspections, servicing and maintenance, without requiring access to the chamber simply to inspect the control equipment.
Both existing sewage pumps and the four-float control arrangement were connected to the new panel.
Approximately one metre of 2-inch protective ducting was installed to route and protect the required cabling between the chamber and the new control panel.
Twin-Pump Control Panel Replacement and Commissioning
The new control panel was installed to replace the original intermittently operating equipment.
Following installation, the existing pumps and four-float arrangement were connected and the control system was commissioned.
Functional testing confirmed correct operation of both pumps, automatic start and stop levels, pump alternation, pump trip protection and the high-level alarm.
All tested functions were confirmed operational.
Pump 1 Loose Discharge Claw Repaired
During the remedial works, Pump 1 was found to have a loose discharge claw.
This was allowing the pump to move out of its correct seated position and fall onto its side within the chamber.
The loose claw was tightened and secured correctly, allowing Pump 1 to sit properly and remain stable.
Both pumps were checked following the repair and confirmed to be correctly seated.
Correct pump seating is important for maintaining a secure connection to the discharge arrangement and supporting reliable pumping operation.
Two New Stainless Steel Pump Lifting Chains Installed
Two new 3-metre stainless steel lifting chains were supplied and fitted as part of the works.
- 1 × 3-metre stainless steel lifting chain fitted to Pump 1
- 1 × 3-metre stainless steel lifting chain fitted to Pump 2
The new lifting chains provide suitable lifting points for future pump removal, inspections, servicing and maintenance.
Twin Sewage Pump Chamber Inspection
Following completion of the mechanical repairs and installation works, both pumps were inspected and confirmed to be sitting correctly.
The four-float control arrangement was retained and connected to the new external control panel.
Both pumps were subsequently tested as part of the complete system recommissioning.
Pump Chamber Commissioning and Testing
Once all remedial works were completed, the complete twin-pump system was recommissioned and function tested.
Testing included:
- Pump 1 operation
- Pump 2 operation
- Automatic pump start levels
- Automatic pump stop levels
- Four-float control arrangement
- Automatic pump alternation
- Pump trip protection
- High-level alarm operation
All tested functions were confirmed to be operating correctly following commissioning.
Parts and Equipment Installed
The following parts and equipment were supplied and installed:
- 1 × New twin-pump control panel
- 2 × 3-metre stainless steel pump lifting chains
- Approximately 1 metre of 2-inch protective ducting
- Associated cabling, connections and installation materials
The existing pumps and four-float control arrangement were retained and recommissioned.
Final Status and Customer Recommendations
All quoted remedial works were completed successfully.
The new control panel has been installed externally, both lifting chains have been fitted, protective ducting has been installed and Pump 1's loose discharge claw has been secured.
Both pumps, the four-float arrangement, automatic start and stop levels, pump alternation, trip protection and high-level alarm were tested and confirmed operational.
As a final recommendation, the customer has been advised to arrange a suitable protective cover for the externally mounted control panel in the coming days, taking account of the manufacturer's recommendations for long-term weather protection.
No further remedial repairs were identified in relation to the works completed during this visit.
